Biography

Leading at close range until severely wounded

Henry Romeyn earned the Medal of Honor for his leadership at Bear Paw Mountain, Montana. Born in Galen, New York, on June 1, 1833, he served in the U.S. Army’s 5th Infantry.

On September 30, 1877, First Lieutenant Romeyn led his command close to the enemy. He held that position and continued directing the fight until he was severely wounded. His official citation recognized his determination to sustain the attack despite the danger.

Romeyn attained the rank of major. His Medal of Honor was presented on November 27, 1894, seventeen years after the action. He died on February 21, 1913, and was buried in Arlington National Cemetery. His award commemorates leadership maintained under close-range fire.
