Lance Sergeant, Canadian Army
Herman James Good was a Canadian soldier who served with the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War. He is most notable for receiving the Victoria Cross, the highest award for gallantry "in the face of the enemy" that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. He earned this prestigious decoration for his exceptional actions and bravery during the Battle of Amiens in August 1918, while fighting in the vicinity of Hangard Wood.
Following the conclusion of the war, Good returned home to Canada and was discharged from active military service in 1919. In civilian life, he found employment in the lumber industry and subsequently dedicated many years of service as a fish and game warden.
Good lived a long life, eventually passing away from a stroke in 1969 at the age of 81. His legacy remains as one of the celebrated heroes of the Canadian military efforts during the Great War.
