Corporal, U.S. Army
Hermann Emil Fichter was an American soldier in the United States Army who served as a corporal during the Apache Wars of the late 19th century. As a member of the 3rd U.S. Cavalry, Fichter operated in the rugged and hostile environments of the American Southwest, where his unit was tasked with patrolling and engaging Apache warriors.
On May 5, 1871, Fichter participated in a fierce engagement against the Apache in the Whetstone Mountains of Arizona. Demonstrating exceptional gallantry under fire, he was one of five men who distinguished themselves during the intense battle. His actions during this encounter earned him the nation's highest military decoration.
Fichter was awarded the Medal of Honor for his bravery during the battle in the Whetstones. His legacy remains as a testament to the arduous and dangerous service of cavalrymen on the American frontier.
