Conductor, British Army
Horace Henry Glasock VC was an English recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.
During the Second Boer War, Glasock served as a gunner in Q Battery, Royal Horse Artillery. Following an action of collective gallantry in South Africa where all ranks behaved with equal bravery and devotion, the Field-Marshal Commanding-in-chief decided to treat the battery's conduct under Rule 13 of the Victoria Cross Warrant. This rule allowed for the collective selection of representatives to receive the decoration.
Under this system, the gunners and drivers of Q Battery elected Glasock to receive the Victoria Cross alongside another comrade, representing the collective heroism of their unit during the engagement.
