Colonel Brevet Brigadier General, U.S. Army
Horace C. Porter was an American soldier and diplomat who served as an officer in the Union Army during the American Civil War. He served as a lieutenant colonel, ordnance officer, and staff officer, and later became the personal secretary to General and President Ulysses S. Grant. He also served as secretary to General William T. Sherman.
Following his distinguished military career, Porter transitioned to the business and diplomatic sectors. He served as the vice president of the Pullman Palace Car Company. He was later appointed as the United States Ambassador to France, serving in that diplomatic role from 1897 to 1905.
Throughout his service, Porter was recognized for his valor and leadership, ultimately achieving the rank of Colonel and Brevet Brigadier General. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions during the Civil War, and was also appointed to the French Legion of Honor.
