Captain, Royal Navy
Captain Hugh Talbot Burgoyne VC was an Irish recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.
Born in Dublin, he was the son of Field Marshal Sir John Fox Burgoyne and the grandson of General John Burgoyne. He served as an officer in the Royal Navy, eventually reaching the rank of Captain.
Burgoyne is best remembered for his conspicuous bravery during the Crimean War, which earned him the Victoria Cross. He tragically lost his life at sea in 1870 when his command, the revolutionary ironclad turret ship HMS Captain, capsized and sank during a storm.
