Hugh Shaw

Near Nukumaru on 24 January 1865, an advanced picquet of the 18th Regiment of Foot held a position half a mile from the main imperial camp under concentrated fire from Māori warriors concealed in the nearby bush. When the skirmish line withdrew to a timber palisade about sixty yards from the bush, two soldiers remained exposed in open ground. One soldier was unable to move due to severe wounds. Captain Hugh Shaw called for volunteers to re-enter the fire zone and perform an extraction. Four privates answered the call. Advancing under heavy fire to within thirty yards of enemy cover, Shaw hoisted the wounded private onto his back and, supported by the four soldiers, brought him back to safety without additional casualties.

Shaw was born in Madras, British India, on 4 February 1839, the son of James Shaw, Principal Inspector-General of Hospitals in the Madras Medical Department, and Ann Hay. Educated at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, he entered the British Army as an Ensign in the 18th Regiment of Foot on 10 May 1855 at the age of sixteen. He joined his regiment in the Crimea in December 1855 following the fall of Sebastopol, serving through the end of the conflict. Promoted to Lieutenant, he saw action during the Indian Mutiny in 1857 before serving as Adjutant of the 2nd Battalion from 1859 to 1864.

After receiving his company command as Captain in 1864, Shaw deployed to New Zealand, where his actions at Nukumaru earned him the Victoria Cross. The London Gazette published his award on 28 November 1865, and he received the medal in New Zealand in 1866. On 21 June 1870, he married Emily Grace Sheffield at Bedford, and the couple subsequently had three daughters.

Shaw served as Adjutant of the North Tipperary Militia from June 1873 to February 1878, receiving promotion to Major on 1 October 1877. Rejoining the active battalion of the Royal Irish Regiment in May 1878, he served with the Khyber Line Field Force during the Second Anglo-Afghan War. Promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel in September 1881, he assumed command of the 1st Battalion in May 1883, leading the unit during the Nile Expedition of 1884–1885 in operations around Sarras and Korti.

For his service in the Sudan campaign and battalion leadership, Shaw was appointed a Companion of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath (CB). He attained the rank of Colonel in September 1885 and completed his four-year battalion command in May 1887. Granted a reward for distinguished service in April 1887, he retired from active duty with the rank of Major-General later that year. Shaw resided at "St Lanner", 5 Victoria Grove, Southsea, until his death on 25 August 1904. He was buried in Highland Road Cemetery, Portsmouth, and his decoration group was subsequently acquired by the National Army Museum in Chelsea.

The official citation published in The London Gazette on 28 November 1865 reads:

"For his gallant conduct at the skirmish near Nukumaru, in New Zealand, on the 24th of January last, in proceeding, under a heavy fire, with four Privates of the Regiment, who volunteered to accompany him, to within 30 yards of the bush occupied by the Rebels, in order to carry off a comrade who was badly wounded. On the afternoon of that day, Captain Shaw was ordered to occupy a position about half a mile from the Camp. He advanced in skirmishing order, and, when about 30 yards from the bush, he deemed it prudent to retire to a palisade about 60 yards from the bush, as two of his party had been wounded. Finding that one of them was unable to move, he called for volunteers to advance to the front to carry the man to the rear, and the four Privates referred to accompanied him, under a heavy fire, to the place where the wounded man was lying, and they succeeded in bringing him to the rear."
