He charged with three others against a far larger war party.
Isaac Payne earned the Medal of Honor during a scouting action in Texas. Born in Mexico in 1854, he served as a trumpeter with the U.S. Army’s Indian Scouts.
On April 25, 1875, along the Pecos River, Payne and three other men charged an opposing force. His official citation describes four scouts taking part in the charge against 25 opponents. His Medal of Honor was presented on May 28, 1875, shortly after the action.
Payne died in Texas on January 12, 1904, and was buried in the Seminole Indian Scout Cemetery. His award and grave commemorate his courage while serving on a small scouting patrol during the Indian Campaigns.
