Private, British Army

He served during the First World War and was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions during the Battle of Neuve Chapelle in March 1915.
King George V presented his Victoria Cross to his mother in November 1916. Following her death, the medal was donated to his regiment and is currently displayed at the Sherwood Foresters Museum in Nottingham. He is also commemorated on the Nottingham Castle Victoria Cross Memorial and by a plaque at Derby railway station.
