Brevet Major General, U.S. Army
James Alexander Williamson was a prominent politician, lawyer, and Union army officer who served during the American Civil War. He entered the service from Iowa and demonstrated significant leadership and bravery during his wartime career, eventually rising to the rank of brigadier general and receiving a brevet promotion to major general of volunteers.
He is best remembered for his conspicuous gallantry during the Battle of Chickasaw Bayou in December 1862. Leading his regiment, the 4th Iowa Infantry, in a daring assault against fortified Confederate positions, Williamson pressed forward under heavy fire despite sustaining a serious wound.
Following his distinguished military service, Williamson returned to his legal and political career, contributing further to his state and nation. His gallantry at Chickasaw Bayou was officially recognized decades later when he was awarded the nation's highest military decoration.
