James Brophy was a Private in the United States Army who served in Company B of the 8th U.S. Cavalry. He received the Medal of Honor, the United States' highest military decoration, for his valorous actions during the Indian Wars in the late 19th century.
On August 13, 1868, Private Brophy was engaged in actions near the Black Mountains in the Arizona Territory. His official citation commends his bravery during scouts and actions against hostile Indian forces in the region.
Brophy was born in Kilkenny, Ireland, and later immigrated to the United States where he enlisted in the military. His Medal of Honor was officially issued on July 24, 1869, cementing his place in American military history.
