Biography

He saved three shipmates from drowning during naval service.

James Carey received the Medal of Honor for rescuing three fellow sailors during peacetime naval service. Born in Ireland in 1844, he served as a seaman in the U.S. Navy aboard USS Huron.

His lifesaving action took place in 1867 near Rio de Janeiro. The official citation credits Carey with saving three shipmates from drowning. The award recognized service in which the safety of other members of the crew depended on his intervention.

Carey received his Medal of Honor during his lifetime. He died in Brooklyn, New York, on September 18, 1913, and was buried in Holy Cross Cemetery there. His award preserves recognition of the three lives he saved.
