James Daniel Gardner, also spelled Gardiner, was an African American Union Army soldier during the American Civil War. Serving as a sergeant, he distinguished himself through acts of conspicuous gallantry on the battlefield.
He is best known for his heroic actions during the Battle of Chaffin's Farm on September 29, 1864, where he demonstrated exceptional courage under fire. For his bravery during this engagement, he was awarded the United States military's highest decoration, the Medal of Honor.
Gardner's legacy remains an important part of the history of African American soldiers who served with distinction in the Union Army during the Civil War.
