Biography
Urged Union cavalry forward in a daring charge at Appomattox
On the morning Lee surrendered at Appomattox, Sergeant James Lemuel Carey was still urging Union cavalry forward in a charge.
Born on December 24, 1839, at Jamesville in Onondaga County, New York, Carey served in Company G, 10th New York Cavalry, known as the Porter Guard.
On April 9, 1865, at Appomattox Courthouse, Virginia, Carey was cited for daring bravery and for urging his men forward in a charge.

Carey died on May 15, 1919, at Grafton, Pennsylvania, and was buried in Chartiers Cemetery at Carnegie, Pennsylvania.
