Biography
Gallantry across three fierce Virginia campaigns in 1864
James Madison Cutts Jr. received one Medal of Honor for gallantry shown across three hard-fought Virginia campaigns in 1864.
Born in Washington, D.C., in 1838, Cutts served as a captain in the 11th U.S. Infantry and later received the brevet rank of lieutenant colonel.
The award recognized his conduct during the Wilderness campaign, at Spotsylvania, and at Petersburg in 1864. Rather than isolating one moment, the official citation covers his gallantry across the series of actions.
