James Murray

A wounded soldier lay exposed to enemy fire at Elandsfontein. Lance-Corporal James Murray advanced across open ground with Trooper John Danaher to reach him. Murray was shot through the body and captured by the Boers, but his extraordinary courage earned him the Victoria Cross, Britain's highest award for gallantry.

Born in St Michael's Parish, Cork, Ireland, in February 1859, James Murray served in the British Army with the 94th Regiment of Foot, later designated the 2nd Battalion, The Connaught Rangers. His military service took him to South Africa, where the regiment participated in the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879 and the Transvaal War of 1880-1881.

On 16 January 1881, during the engagement at Elandsfontein near Pretoria, British soldiers were forced to withdraw after encountering a strong Boer position. Two wounded soldiers of the 21st Foot were left exposed to enemy fire. Murray and Trooper John Danaher of Nourse's Horse advanced approximately 500 yards under intense fire to reach them. The official Victoria Cross citation specifically records their recovery of a severely wounded private and Murray's own serious wound during the attempt.

Murray was captured following the action and subsequently released. His gallantry was officially recognised in the London Gazette on 14 March 1882, Issue 25084, page 1130. Queen Victoria personally presented his Victoria Cross at Windsor Castle on 15 May 1882.

His surviving medal group includes the South Africa Medal 1877-79 with the 1879 clasp, recognising his qualifying South African campaign service, and the King George VI Coronation Medal 1937. Together with his Victoria Cross, these honours preserve the record of a soldier whose courage under fire became part of the history of the Connaught Rangers.

James Murray died in Dublin on 19 July 1942. His Victoria Cross is preserved in the collection of the National Army Museum in London. His story remains a powerful reminder of the courage and loyalty shown by soldiers who risked their lives to save their comrades.
