James Wiley (Medal of Honor)

Captured a Georgia regiment's flag during the fighting at Gettysburg

On the third day at Gettysburg, Sergeant James Wiley captured the flag of a Georgia regiment during the fighting that stopped the Confederate assault on the Union center.

Wiley was born in 1835 in Ohio. During the Civil War he served as Sergeant, Company B, 59th New York Infantry.

On July 3, 1863, at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, he captured the enemy colors. His Medal of Honor citation identifies the flag as belonging to a Georgia regiment.
