Brevet Captain, U.S. Army
Francis Jefferson Coates was a soldier in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Serving with the U.S. Army, he fought in some of the most critical engagements of the conflict, most notably during the Battle of Gettysburg in July 1863.
Coates was recognized for his conspicuous gallantry on the battlefield of Gettysburg, making him one of 64 men to receive the Medal of Honor for actions during this historic three-day battle. His actions during the civil war earned him a promotion to the rank of Brevet Captain.
His legacy remains preserved as one of the distinguished Union soldiers whose bravery helped turn the tide of the American Civil War at Gettysburg.
