Sergeant, British Army
Sergeant John Carmichael was a British Army soldier and a Scottish recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.
Born and raised near the village of Glenmavis, Carmichael served during the First World War. His exceptional bravery was officially recognized by his country, leading to a civic ceremony held in his honor at the Airdrie town hall on July 9, 1918.
In addition to the Victoria Cross, he was also awarded the Military Medal for his distinguished service. Today, his Victoria Cross is preserved and displayed at the Staffordshire Regiment Museum located at Whittington Barracks in Lichfield, Staffordshire, serving as a lasting testament to his valor.
