Private (or equivalent), Canadian Army
John Bernard Croak was a Canadian soldier who served with the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War. He is remembered as a posthumous recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.
Private Croak earned his Victoria Cross for heroic actions that occurred during the Battle of Amiens in August 1918. His bravery and ultimate sacrifice during this pivotal offensive became a point of immense pride for his home country.
To honor his memory, a park and an elementary school were named after him in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia. His medals, which were later donated to the Army Museum at the Citadel in Halifax, are now displayed at the Canadian War Museum, preserving his legacy of valor for future generations.
