Private First Class, U.S. Army
John F. Thorson was a United States Army infantry soldier who served during World War II. Born in Iowa, he entered military service from his home state and was deployed to the Pacific theater of operations. It was there, during intense combat on October 28, 1944, that he sacrificed his life in an act of extraordinary heroism.
His selfless actions above and beyond the call of duty earned him the nation's highest military decoration for valor, the Medal of Honor, which was awarded posthumously. He was also awarded the Purple Heart for his fatal wounds sustained in action.
In lasting tribute to his sacrifice, the United States Army named a transport ship, the USAT Private John F. Thorson, in his honor. The vessel went on to serve in the Pacific Ocean during the closing stages of World War II, preserving the legacy of Private First Class Thorson's ultimate sacrifice.
