Biography

A long cavalry pursuit brought recognition in western Texas.

John Francis O’Sullivan earned the Medal of Honor for gallantry during a prolonged pursuit on the Staked Plains of Texas on December 8, 1874. He served as a private in Company I, 4th U.S. Cavalry, during the American Indian Wars.

Born in County Kerry, Ireland, in 1850, O’Sullivan received his medal on October 13, 1875. He died in New York City on May 19, 1907. He was buried in Calvary Cemetery in Queens; a memorial marker at Fort Concho, Texas, also commemorates him.
