Lance Sergeant, British Army
Lance Sergeant John Harold Rhodes was a highly decorated British Army soldier of the First World War. Serving with the Grenadier Guards, he rose to the rank of Lance Sergeant and became one of his regiment's most celebrated heroes due to his extraordinary bravery in the face of the enemy.
Rhodes was awarded the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious decoration for gallantry in the British and Commonwealth armed forces, for his conspicuous bravery during the war. In addition to this supreme honor, he was also awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal with a Bar, representing a second award of the prestigious decoration for gallantry in active service.
His legacy remains highly respected, with his Victoria Cross preserved and displayed at The Guards Regimental Headquarters in Wellington Barracks, London. He is also remembered through various local memorials, including a plaque at the Chatterley Whitfield Mining Museum, a memorial in Packmoor, and a street named in his honor in Tunstall.
