Captain, U.S. Marine Corps
Captain John James McGinty III was a United States Marine Corps officer who received the United States military's highest decoration, the Medal of Honor, for heroism during July 1966 in the Vietnam War.
McGinty served as an enlisted Marine and drill instructor before deploying to South Vietnam, where he served as a platoon sergeant in the 3rd Battalion, 4th Marines. During Operation Hastings, his platoon was heavily engaged by a numerically superior enemy force. Despite suffering severe wounds, McGinty repeatedly exposed himself to enemy fire, reorganized his men, directed airstrikes, and personally killed several enemy soldiers to prevent his position from being overrun.
Following his actions in Vietnam, McGinty was commissioned as an officer, eventually reaching the rank of Captain. His legacy remains a testament to the courage and leadership expected of United States Marines in combat.
