Corporal, U.S. Army
John James was a British-born American soldier who served as a corporal in the United States Army during the late 19th century. He was a member of the 5th U.S. Cavalry, a regiment that saw extensive action during the American Indian Wars. James's service is most notably marked by his participation in the Indian Wars on the American frontier.
On September 9–11, 1874, Corporal James was engaged in the Battle of the Upper Washita River near Canadian, Texas. During this intense engagement, he demonstrated exceptional gallantry under fire. His actions during the multi-day battle earned him the nation's highest military decoration.
For his conspicuous bravery during the battle, James was awarded the Medal of Honor, becoming one of only seven men to receive the decoration for this specific engagement. His legacy remains preserved as a testament to the frontier soldiers of the era.
