Captain, British Army
Captain John Niel Randle, VC was an officer in the British Army during the Second World War. He is best known as a recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.
Randle received his decoration for his heroic actions during the critical battles fought in India. His award is notable as one of only three Victoria Crosses awarded for actions during these engagements in India, alongside those awarded to John Pennington Harman and Abdul Hafiz at the Battle of Imphal.
Today, his Victoria Cross is preserved for public memory, having been placed on loan to the Imperial War Museum by his son, John. It is displayed in the museum alongside the Victoria Cross of his close friend, Leonard Cheshire.
