Sergeant, British Army
John Paton VC was a Scottish recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. He served as a Sergeant in the British Army during the mid-19th century, earning distinction for his actions with the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
Paton was awarded the Victoria Cross for his valour under fire during the Battle of Lucknow, where he was one of six soldiers nominated by non-commissioned officers to receive the medal. His decoration was personally bestowed by Queen Victoria during a ceremony in England.
In addition to the Victoria Cross, Paton received campaign medals for bravery during the Crimean War and the Indian Mutiny. His Victoria Cross was eventually donated to his old regiment and is currently displayed at the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders Museum in Stirling Castle, Scotland.
