Lance Corporal, U.S. Marine Corps
José Francisco "Jo Jo" Jiménez was a United States Marine Corps Lance Corporal who served with distinction during the Vietnam War. Born in Mexico and raised in Michigan, he chose to serve his adopted country by enlisting in the Marine Corps. Assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 26th Marines, 9th Marine Amphibious Brigade, he was deployed to the Republic of Vietnam.
On August 28, 1969, during operations in Quảng Nam Province, Lance Corporal Jiménez's unit came under heavy attack from a North Vietnamese Army force. Demonstrating extraordinary heroism, he single-handedly destroyed several enemy gun positions and personally neutralized multiple enemy soldiers while exposing himself to intense hostile fire. His courageous actions allowed his platoon to secure its objective and saved the lives of his fellow Marines.
Jiménez was mortally wounded during this fierce engagement. For his conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty, he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor. His legacy remains an inspiration within the Marine Corps and the broader military community.
