Master Sergeant, U.S. Army
José Mendoza López was a Mexican-born United States Army soldier who was awarded the United States' highest military decoration for valor in combat, the Medal of Honor, for his actions during the Battle of the Bulge in World War II. Serving as an infantryman, López single-handedly repulsed a massive German infantry attack, killing at least 100 enemy troops with his machine gun, allowing his company to withdraw and reorganize.
