Biography

He faced enemy fire while cutting the cable from Cienfuegos.

Joseph Francis Scott earned the Medal of Honor as a Marine private attached to USS Nashville. On May 11, 1898, during the Spanish-American War, he displayed courage under heavy enemy fire in the operation to cut the cable leading from Cienfuegos, Cuba.

Scott later attained the rank of corporal. Born in Boston on June 4, 1866, he received his medal at the Charlestown Navy Yard on August 16, 1899. He died in Cambridge, Massachusetts, on February 28, 1941, and was buried at Cambridge Cemetery.

Medal of Honor citation

On board the U.S.S. Nashville during the operation of cutting the cable leading from Cienfuegos, Cuba, 11 May 1898. Facing the heavy fire of the enemy, Scott displayed extraordinary bravery and coolness throughout this action.
