Sergeant Major, U.S. Army
Julius Dexter Rhodes was a Sergeant Major in the United States Army who served with distinction during the American Civil War. He was a member of the 105th New York Volunteers, a regiment that saw intense combat throughout the conflict.
During the Battle of Thoroughfare Gap, Rhodes displayed immense bravery when his horse was shot from under him. Undeterred, he continued to assist his unit in advancing against the enemy line, maintaining the momentum of the assault under heavy fire.
Rhodes was later wounded in action during the Second Battle of Bull Run. In recognition of his gallantry and heroic actions during the war, he was officially awarded the Medal of Honor in 1887.
