Saddler, U.S. Army
Julius Henry Stickoffer was a Swiss-born American soldier who served as a saddler in the U.S. Army. Enlisted with the 8th U.S. Cavalry, his service took place during the Indian Wars period in the American West.
On November 11, 1868, Stickoffer distinguished himself during an engagement against hostile Indians at Cienaga Springs in the Utah Territory. His actions during the fight were officially cited for gallantry in action.
Two years after the engagement, Stickoffer was awarded the Medal of Honor for his bravery. He holds the distinction of being the only member of the United States armed forces to receive the nation's highest military decoration for actions during that specific seven-year conflict.
