Havildar, British Indian Army

Kulbir Thapa Magar was a Nepalese Gurkha soldier who served in the British Indian Army. He was the first Gurkha recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.
His historic actions occurred during the First World War while serving as a Rifleman in the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Queen Alexandra's Own Gurkha Rifles. He achieved the rank of Havildar during his military career.
He is remembered as a pioneering figure in the history of the Gurkhas and the British Indian Army, paving the way for many subsequent Gurkha recipients of the Victoria Cross.
