Hon. Havildar, British Indian Army
Hon. Havildar Lachhiman Gurung was a Nepalese-British Gurkha soldier who distinguished himself in battle during World War II. Serving with the 4th Battalion, 8th Gurkha Rifles, Gurung became famous for his extraordinary bravery, earning the moniker of the "Gurkha who took on 200 soldiers with only one hand" due to his actions against overwhelming enemy forces.
His remarkable courage and determination under extreme enemy fire earned him the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.
Following his distinguished military service, his legacy remains highly respected in both British and Indian military history. The physical medal of his Victoria Cross is currently held in India by his parent unit, the 4th Battalion, 8th Gurkha Rifles.
