Biography

Rode through 50 raiders and held the line all night long!

0\Le Roy Williams was born in Oswego, New York, on 18 August 1845. The sources reviewed do not identify a prewar occupation or family background.

He served in Company G, 8th New York Heavy Artillery, rising from sergeant to first lieutenant. At Cold Harbor on 3 June 1864, he and four companions recovered their colonel’s body from near Confederate lines under cover of darkness, approaching close to enemy pickets. The Medal of Honor was presented on in 1919.

Williams died in Cleveland, Ohio, on 14 February 1930 and was buried at Oakwood Cemetery in Niagara Falls, New York.
