Gunner's Mate Third Class, U.S. Navy
Leonard Chadwick was a United States Navy sailor who served during the Spanish–American War. Serving as an Apprentice 1st Class aboard the USS Marblehead (C-11), he participated in the hazardous cable-cutting operations off Cienfuegos, Cuba, on May 11, 1898.
During the operation, Chadwick and his fellow crewmembers faced heavy enemy fire while attempting to sever the underwater communication cables. His extraordinary bravery and coolness under fire during this action earned him the nation's highest military decoration, the Medal of Honor.
Following his distinguished service in the Spanish–American War, Chadwick was also recognized with the Sampson Medal and the Spanish Campaign Medal for his participation in the campaign.
