Wing Commander, Royal Canadian Air Force
Wing Commander Lloyd Vernon "Chad" Chadburn, DSO & Bar, DFC, was a distinguished Canadian World War II fighter pilot serving with the Royal Canadian Air Force. He became one of the war's highly decorated aviators, recognized for his tactical skill and leadership in the air. His record includes five enemy airplanes destroyed, five probably destroyed, and seven damaged, along with significant strikes against enemy naval assets, including the destruction of two E-boats and damage inflicted on a destroyer.
Chadburn's exceptional service was recognized by both his home country and allied nations. He was one of only three Royal Canadian Air Force officers to be appointed a Chevalier (knight) in the French Légion d'honneur, and he was the sole RCAF officer to receive the Croix de Guerre from France. His leadership and combat record made him a legendary figure within the RCAF during the air war over Europe.
He is memorialized at Aurora High School and Northern Secondary School in Toronto, Ontario, which he attended during his youth. His heroic exploits were also popularized during the war, featuring in True Aviation Comics No. 10, cementing his legacy as a premier Canadian air hero of the Second World War.
