Private corporal Ordinary Seaman, U.S. Navy
Lewis Capet Shepard, whose first name was erroneously recorded as Louis due to a Navy clerical error, was a Union Navy sailor during the American Civil War. He served with distinction as an Ordinary Seaman, eventually rising to the ranks of private and corporal.
Shepard was awarded America's highest military decoration, the Medal of Honor, for his actions during the Second Battle of Fort Fisher. His conspicuous gallantry during this significant Civil War engagement earned him lifelong recognition among his peers.
Following his service, Shepard was received as a companion of the First Class of the Medal of Honor Legion of the United States of America in October 1892. His official certificate was signed in June 1897 by Commander Nelson A. Miles and Adjutant John Tweedale, cementing his legacy as a recognized American military hero.
