Biography
An Army scout faced the dangers of Arizona winter campaigns.
Machol, recorded as MacHol by the Congressional Medal of Honor Society, served as a private in the United States Army's Indian Scouts. His Medal of Honor recognised gallant conduct during campaigns and engagements against Apaches in Arizona Territory in 1872. The campaign extended through the winter of 1872–1873, when Army columns depended on Indian Scouts to guide them through difficult country.
His award recognized bravery across the campaign and its engagements. His decoration was issued on 12 April 1875 and was not posthumous.
