Manley James

Brigadier Manley Angell James, registered under British Army service number 9531, was born in Odiham, Hampshire, on 12 July 1896, the son of a physician, Dr John Angell James. Educated at Bristol Grammar School, where he achieved the rank of cadet sergeant in the Officers' Training Corps, he resolved to abandon intended medical studies at Bristol University following the outbreak of the First World War, securing a temporary commission as a second lieutenant in the 8th (Service) Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment, on 1 December 1914. Deployed to France in July 1915 with the 19th (Western) Division, he assumed charge of the battalion Lewis gun detachment, demonstrating an aggressive technical grasp of automatic fire support that established his reputation as a junior combat commander. On 3 July 1916, during the costly assault on the fortified ruins of La Boisselle on the Somme, James was severely wounded in the thigh while directing his gun crews under point-blank fire, earning his first mention in despatches. After convalescing in Britain, he returned to France in December 1916 on brigade headquarters staff. He rejoined his regiment in early 1917 and suffered further shrapnel wounds during trench operations in February 1917, an action that yielded a second mention in despatches. Given command of A Company as an acting captain, he led the assault on the formidable redoubt at Druid’s Farm during the Battle of Messines in June 1917. Advancing through an intense counter-barrage, he secured vital reconnaissance data, rallied broken supporting units under defensive fire, captured and consolidated the strongpoint, and completed an exposed personal survey across the entire front line to transmit operational intelligence to headquarters, earning the Military Cross and securing for his company the unique distinction of wearing the divisional butterfly sleeve emblem.

The height of James’s combat career occurred during Operation Michael, the German Spring Offensive launched on 21 March 1918. Positioned near Vélu Wood, his company met the spearhead of the German advance, conducting fierce local attacks and organizing an unyielding rearguard stand that absorbed repeated assaults, preserved the withdrawal corridor for the brigade, and protected adjacent artillery from capture. His Victoria Cross was announced in The London Gazette on 28 June 1918 (Supplement 30770, pages 7617–7618). Citation summary: James led his company in an attack and continued commanding after being wounded. His company resisted repeated assaults and held its position despite an enemy breakthrough on its flank, buying time for guns and the brigade to withdraw. Ordered to hold to the last, he led a local counter-attack and was wounded again. Last seen operating a machine gun alone after a third wound, his example enabled the battalion to withdraw before it was cut off. Discovered unconscious in a shell crater with severe bullet and shrapnel wounds across his neck, jaw, shoulder, and abdomen, James survived German field hospitals and confinement within prisoner-of-war camps at Stralkowo, Rastatt, and Schweidnitz, returning to Britain following the Armistice on Christmas Day 1918. King George V invested him with the Victoria Cross at Buckingham Palace on 22 February 1919. Granted a permanent Regular Army commission in the Gloucestershire Regiment in December 1920, he completed occupation duties in Upper Silesia and the Rhineland, served as regimental adjutant, commanded a company in Egypt, and graduated from the Staff College, Camberley, before serving as Brigade Major of the 13th Infantry Brigade during the Arab revolt in Palestine. In January 1939, he transferred to the Royal Sussex Regiment to assume command of its 2nd Battalion. Appointed commander of the 128th Infantry Brigade in February 1941, James deployed with the formation to French North Africa in early 1943, where his resolute tactical direction and frontline poise during the defensive crises and counter-strokes of the Tunisian Campaign earned him the Distinguished Service Order. Leading the 128th Brigade during the amphibious assault at Salerno on 9 September 1943, he directed heavy inland engagements against German counter-attacks until severe leg wounds on 20 September forced his medical evacuation to Egypt. After convalescing, he supervised home training formations, commanded the 140th Infantry Brigade, and served from 1948 to 1951 as Director of Ground Defence at the Air Ministry, retiring as a substantive brigadier. Appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire, Civil Division (MBE), in the 1958 Birthday Honours for his work as Civil Defence Officer, Bristol Aeroplane Company Ltd, and having served as Deputy Lieutenant of Gloucestershire, he died in Westbury-on-Trym on 23 September 1975.
