Captured a Confederate battle flag in close, brutal combat.
Marshall Sherman carried home one of the most famous captured flags of Gettysburg. A private in Company C, 1st Minnesota Infantry, Sherman took part in the fighting on July 3, 1863, when his regiment confronted Pickett's Charge.
In the close fighting Sherman captured the battle flag of the 28th Virginia Infantry. That act brought him the Medal of Honor on December 1, 1864. The captured flag became closely associated with the memory of the 1st Minnesota's service at Gettysburg.
