First Lieutenant, U.S. Army
Martin Schubert was a first lieutenant in the United States Army who served during the American Civil War. He was recognized for his conspicuous gallantry during one of the war's most significant engagements, the Battle of Fredericksburg in Virginia.
On 13 December 1862, during the fierce fighting at Fredericksburg, Schubert performed the actions that would later earn him the nation's highest military decoration. Despite the passage of time following the conflict, his valor was officially recognized decades later.
Schubert was formally awarded the Medal of Honor on 1 September 1893. His dedication and bravery under fire remain a distinguished part of the Union Army's historical legacy.
