Biography
Dr. Mary Edwards Walker was an American abolitionist, prohibitionist, prisoner of war, and surgeon who served during the American Civil War. She is distinguished as the only woman to receive the Medal of Honor, which was personally awarded to her by President Andrew Johnson as an alternative to a military commission.
