Matthias W. Day was a career United States Army officer who served during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He is best known for his long service with the African-American 9th Cavalry Regiment, with whom he saw significant action during the Apache Wars, campaigning against prominent leaders such as Victorio and Geronimo.
Day received the Medal of Honor, the nation's highest military decoration, for his conspicuous gallantry in action during the American Indian Wars. He rose through the ranks over his career, eventually retiring at the rank of Colonel.
His legacy remains tied to his dedicated service on the American frontier and his leadership of Buffalo Soldiers during some of the most challenging campaigns of the Indian Wars.
