Captain, British Indian Army
Michael Allmand VC was an English-French officer of the Indian Army during the Second World War. He was a posthumous recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.
On 23 June 1944 during the Battle of Mogaung in Burma, Allmand was commanding the leading platoon of his company. The platoon was ordered to attack the Pin Hmi Road Bridge. When they came under heavy fire from the enemy, he charged the enemy position single-handed and succeeded in killing three of them and capturing the position.
He was mortally wounded in a subsequent action a few days later. His actions during the offensive showed outstanding gallantry, leadership, and devotion to duty, which inspired all those who served alongside him. He is buried in the Taukkyan War Cemetery in Myanmar.
