Biography
Spiked an enemy gun under devastating fire during a landing.
Michael C. Horgan earned the Medal of Honor under another name. Navy and Medal of Honor records identify him as Martin Howard, with Horgan recorded as his other known name.
Born in Ireland in 1843, he served as a landsman aboard USS Tacony. During the capture of Plymouth, North Carolina, on October 31, 1864, he took part in a landing party that moved against an enemy 9-inch gun. Under heavy musket fire, the party reached the weapon and spiked it, preventing its further use.
Medal of Honor Citation (condensed): During the taking of Plymouth, he performed his duties faithfully and showed conspicuous coolness while helping land and spike a 9-inch gun under devastating enemy musketry.
Horgan died in Boston on November 27, 1910, and was buried in Holy Cross Cemetery in Malden, Massachusetts.
