Corporal, U.S. Army
Michael Joseph Crescenz was a United States Army Corporal who served during the Vietnam War. He is best known for his heroic actions on November 20, 1968, near the village of Hiep Duc in the Republic of Vietnam. During a combat operation, his unit came under intense enemy fire, and Corporal Crescenz distinguished himself through conspicuous gallantry at the cost of his life.
For his extraordinary heroism and selflessness during the engagement, Corporal Crescenz was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor, the nation's highest military decoration for valor. His actions saved the lives of additional members of his unit and helped defeat the enemy force.
In addition to the Medal of Honor, his sacrifice and service were recognized with the Purple Heart, the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with one bronze service star, and the Vietnam Campaign Medal.
