Fired with one hand after an amputation to lead his men on.
Corporal Miles James served in Company B, 36th U.S. Colored Infantry, later reaching first sergeant. During the action at Chapin’s Farm, Virginia, on 30 September 1864, after his arm was mutilated and required amputation, he continued loading and firing his weapon with one hand and urged his men forward near the enemy works. The Medal of Honor was presented on 6 April 1865.
