Second Lieutenant, New Zealand Army
Moana-Nui-a-Kiwa Ngarimu VC was a soldier of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force and a posthumous recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. He was the first Māori person to be awarded the Victoria Cross while serving with New Zealand forces.
He served during World War II and was killed in action during Operation Supercharge II, which was a part of the Tunisian campaign. His gallantry and actions during the conflict cemented his legacy as a legendary figure in New Zealand military history.
His Victoria Cross, one of only two ever awarded to Māori, was presented to his parents by the Governor General of New Zealand at a hui in Ruatoria. Ngarimu's legacy is commemorated through an educational scholarship for Māori, displays at the Tairawhiti Museum and Auckland War Memorial Museum, and a memorial plaque in Dunedin.
