Major, Canadian Army
Okill Massey Learmonth, VC, MC, was a distinguished Canadian soldier of the First World War. Serving with the Canadian Expeditionary Force, he rose to the rank of Major during his service. He is best remembered for his conspicuous bravery and leadership during the intense fighting of the conflict.
Learmonth was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. His heroic actions took place during the Battle of Hill 70 in August 1917, where his courage and devotion to duty stood out.
In addition to the Victoria Cross, Learmonth was also a recipient of the Military Cross. His legacy remains an enduring symbol of Canadian valor and sacrifice during the Great War.
